Get Involved
Thousands of cosmetologists and other volunteers participate in LGFB group programs each year. All volunteer cosmetologists are trained and certified for LGFB locally by the American Cancer Society and participate in annual update courses. Workshops are also offered at the local, state and national level to keep the program fresh and keep volunteers in touch with one another.
Whether you are a salon professional or simply a caring individual with good organizational, administrative and interpersonal skills, there may be a local LGFB volunteer opportunity for you:
Volunteer Cosmetologists
Experienced, licensed cosmetologists, including formally trained estheticians, make-up artists and nail technicians are sought on an ongoing basis to conduct group programs and/or one-on-one salon consultations. As a volunteer cosmetologist, you are the voice of LGFB, teaching women the tips and techniques to improve their appearance and maintain a positive self-image. The commitment is just three to five hours a month plus a four-hour LGFB certification class. The class teaches the basics of leading a LGFB group program, as well as understanding cancer and its physical and psychological impact. Volunteers also participate in an annual update class to refresh and expand their knowledge.
General Volunteers
Every local LGFB program requires well-organized, caring, friendly, dynamic volunteers who can make everything run smoothly. These volunteers work with the American Cancer Society to help organize group programs at host sites, promote participation, place reminder calls to patients, organize supplies, set up rooms, and provide assistance during the sessions.
